Thanks to the producers of EastEnders who have produced 'Spiked'; a 5-part mini-series to highlight the dangers of drinks being spiked. Interestingly, it's been made as a series of social media shorts.
Spiking is already a criminal offence but it was widely publicised to be included in the King's Speech this year. Instead of naming it as a specific criminal offence as was expected, instead, it mentioned spiking in the context of strengthening the law to improve the police response. This in itself is most welcome as spiking complaints are not taken very seriously.
'Spiked' tells the story of Anna who has her drink spiked on a night out with friends. It very much resonated with us at Drug Test London as people often call us after suspecting that they have been spiked. Most are young and female, and are distraught after the event. Their parents often get involved out of concern for their children and are as psychologically affected.
People want to know what happened to them, what drugs might have been involved and who might have done it. The problem with testing after the event is that the spiking often occurs over the weekend. By Monday morning it is often too long after the event to test for the drugs that might have been used.
That's why, at Drug Test London, we strongly believe in prevention including the use of our spiked drink detector strips.
